Physical Education General Information Download Physical Education Requirement Sheet Here LOCKS & LOCKERS When getting dressed for physical education class, students are to store their clothes in the large locker to the left of their small locker. All possessions are to be locked in that locker. At the end of class, students must return their gym clothes to their small locker. Students are responsible for locking their belongings in the lockers. Locked lockers help to prevent personal items from being lost or stolen. PHYSICAL EDUCATION PREPERATION If your child has a pattern of not being prepared for class you will be notified. Students that do not participate in physical education class will not be eligible to participate in after school sports on that day.All athletes may only wear their team uniforms for competitions and to show spirit on the day of a game. They may not use their uniform for physical education class, practice, or casual wear outside of school. GRADING PROCEDURE
PHYSICAL EDUCATION STANDARDS FOR SKILL PERFORMANCE/PARTICIPATION Level 4- student can perform activities and is engaged at the highest level. Student is able to maintain focus; always follows class rules, performs skills or tasks successfully in a variety of planned and unplanned situations and can modify performance to meet demands of the situation. Level 3- Students can perform activities successfully with concentration and is engaged in performance of activities most of the time and stays focused most of the time. Student has developed control in predictable situations and is beginning to perform successfully in unpredictable situations and sometimes modifies the performance to meet the demand of the situation. Level 2- Student performance is in consistent and student is engaged in activities some of the time. Student may need prompting and help to stay on task. Student may have difficulty maintaining control and/or following class rules. Student has difficulty modifying their performance to meet the demands of the situation. Level 1- Student has great difficulty performing activities. Student is disengaged in activities most of the time and is unable to stay on task most of the time. Student has no self control, does not follow class routines and is unable to modify their performance to meet the demands of the situation. Level 0- Student is unable to perform any physical activities and may be disengaged and unfocused. Student may deny personal responsibility and blame others fir their behavior. SKILL PERFORMANCE Each unit may include formative and summative assessments of student personal skill development. Application of skill and application of strategies may be used in formulating a skills grade for each unit. COGNITIVE EVALUATION Students will demonstrate an understanding of the general concepts of the game/activity, rules and application, scoring and specific game etiquette. Written tests and portfolio assessments may be used to evaluate student knowledge. PHYSICAL FITNESS TESTING All students will be pre-tested in the fall to determine their fitness level and re-tested in the spring to measure their improvement. Students will be encouraged to improve their fitness scores throughout the year. An individual portfolio of progress will kept for the three years at Murphy and can be used as a reference. JEWLERY ALL JEWELERY must be removed in order to participate in physical education class. This includes rings, necklaces, bracelets, ankle bracelets, watches, earrings, & any other body parts that are pierced. Newly pierced ears only will be allowed TWO weeks of tape. Beyond that time the school district physician states that all jewelry is to be removed. CLASS PROCEDURES Students are to arrive on time to the locker room and to be on time for the start of class. After changing quickly, they are to remain seated on the bench until instructed by the teacher to enter the gymnasium. Proper behavior in the locker room is expected, no horse play will be tolerated. Upon entering the gymnasium they are to go directly to their squad places for warm-ups. STUDENTS ARE NEVER TO GO ON ANY EQUIPTMENT IN THE GYMNASIUM UNTL THEY HAVE RECEIVED A PROPER WARM-UP AND ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO. This rule is for the safety of all students and must be followed at all times. MEDICAL EXCUSES In the event that a student is physically unable to participate in physical education class a note is required that day. This note is to be written and signed by the parent/guardian, the school nurse, or physician. Notes from parents/guardians are acceptable for up to two consecutive classes. In the event of a more serious illness or injury a note will be needed from a physician. Students becoming ill during the day will need to confer with the physical education teacher. They will have them change and observe the class or be sent to the school nurse. Any student who becomes injured during class must immediately report the injury to the physical education teacher. Students who have a Doctors medical note for more than two weeks will be assigned written work to be completed for a grade. CURRICULM The following curriculum has been established for Murphy physical education.
_________________________________________________________________________ Health Information Download Health Requirement Sheet Here Health is a New York State requirement for all students in seventh grade. The Health Education course offered includes the following topics; mental, physical and social health, use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, communicable and non-communicable disease prevention, including sexually transmitted infections, human sexuality and family life (optional). The health class provides information in simple, understandable terms which is meaningful today and applicable to future situations which may arise. Students will participate in group activities, complete health related projects and use decision making skills in classroom discussions. The emphasis of this course is place on personal responsibility, respect for self and others, self-confidence and being accountable for one’s personal health, wellness and behavior. 1601 Health with Human Sexuality/Family Life 1⁄2 credit This course includes the Human sexuality/Family Life Unit in addition to the topics listed above. The general topics discussed in this class are puberty review, anatomy and physiology, increase of self-awareness, self-respect, perceptions and interactions with family and friends and attitudes about dating and developing relationships. 1608 Health without Human Sexuality/Family Life 1⁄2 credit This course is for those students who do not elect to participate in the Human Sexuality/Family Life Curriculum. It is taught in conjunction with course 1601. An alternative curriculum of current medical techniques and first aid procedures is substituted for the Human Sexuality/Family Life curriculum. |
