The Art Club will continue to beautify Murphy. A focus of the art club will be communicating social issues through the arts in the form of group projects (i.e., murals). We also plan to get involved with community activities such as the Setuaket holiday parade, Student Government, and the Senior Citizens Dinner.

Best Buddies is a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-on-one friendships with peers who do no have disabilities. 
CREATIVE WRITING

Meetings are on Tuesdays in Room 107 until 3:55 p.m.
The Creative Writing Club will provide opportunities for 7-9 grade students to craft and publish creative writing pieces using innovative techniques.  Students will have an integral role in planning the 2008 Poetry Slam as well as participate in writing contests/competitions at the local, regional, and national levels. 
GET A VOICE CLUB

Club meets Thursdays in Room 305 until 3:55 p.m.       
The Get A Voice Club will engage students in leadership opportunities important to adolescents.  Students will choose various social issues of interest such as media, friendships, social environment, diversity, etc. and participate in activities and discussions that will help them take a leading role in making a difference. 

GLOBAL LANGUAGE

Begins in late January 2008 in Rm. 118 at 2:30 pm.
Students will be selected based upon Academic Performance in Global 7, 8, and 9. Students must have an A average in 7th grade, 8th grade and first and second marking periods of 9th grade. Students will act as peer tutors, work on Foreign Language Week and have an induction ceremony in May.

GREENHOUSE CLUB

Meetings will be Tuesdays until 3:55 p.m. in Room 218.
Members of the club work in the greenhouse to grow, propagate, and plant various agricultural specimens.  Our goal this year is to set up hydroponics apparatus and to beautify the school grounds with our plants.
HOME & CAREERS CLUB

Meetings are on Tuesdays in Room 302 until 3:55 p.m.

The Home and Careers Club participates in activities such as cooking, sewing, community service, school events and fundraising.  This club provides opportunity for students to become active members of the community.

Meetings are on Wednesdays from 12:15-1:00 in Rm 201 and sometimes after school until 3:55 when events are scheduled.
The Murphy Leaders Club is a service organization for 9th grade athletes interested in helping others. The days will change according to athletic competition schedules.  May participate in numerous school and community service functions.

Groups of students interested in mathematics answer challenging questions and formulate solutions to mathematical problems.  The teams are open to all students with an interest in mathematics who are willing to meet on a weekly basis and to compete with other schools once a month in formal competition.

R. C. Murphy J.H.S. musical production is open to all 7th, 8th and 9th grade students.  We rehearse Monday through Friday 3:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium.  Over 150 students participate in all aspects of musical theatre, from stage acting to production.  Rehearsals start in December and continue through March.

This community service organization is made up of 9th graders who were inducted into the society in 8th grade, based on the five qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Members meet as needed to organize activities which benefit the school and the community, and assist at other school functions. Most meetings are during the school day except for service projects at night. 

NEWSPAPER

Meetings are on Mondays at 2:45 in room 112.
The Newspaper Club will be meeting on Mondays after school in Room 112 until 3:55 p.m. and is open to all 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students.  Learn the journalistic approach to newspaper writing, interview techniques, book and movie reviews, as well as layout and design.  Our school newspaper has won many journalism awards in the past and you can be a part of this winning team.

RCM JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Rehearsals are on Wednesdays until 3:55 p.m. Room 315
The Jazz ensemble consists of instrumental music students who play the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, piano, bass guitar/acoustic bass, guitar and drum set. Program content contains the study of jazz idiom's musical elements, including an introduction to improvisation.
SCIENCE BOWL COMPETITION

Meetings are every Thursday after school in Rm 222 until 3:55 p.m.
The Science Bowl Club helps to prepare our students to compete in the Regional Science Bowl Competition, held annually (April) at Brookhaven National Lab. The competition consists of an academic piece as well as the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Race.

Meets on Wednesdays after school in Room 108 until 3:55 p.m.
Students will develop and work on a series of individual and team interscholastic competitions.  These events encourage learning in biology, earth science, chemistry, physics and problem-solving technology.  In February, students will participate in the Regional Science Olympiad. 
SELECT GIRLS CHORUS

Club will meet one night a week for 2 hours in the Auditorium.

Chorus selected by audition only.  Students will perform three to five times a year at various concerts and special events.  Made up of 30 - 40 7th, 8th and 9th grade students. 
SET DESIGN & BUILDING

Meetings are TBA in Rm 313 until 3:55 p.m.
Teach students how to design, build and choreograph sets and scenery for school shows and events.  Club meets throughout the year during set-designing and building times, which includes Saturdays and evenings and may meet up to 8 hours at a time. Students will also explore avenues in technology such as production and process.  Activities will include but not limited to, wood crafts, computer graphics/animation, rocketry and metalworking.

This club provides technical support for all school auditorium presentations.  Members learn to operate all sound and lighting equipment and offer great assistance in our annual play.  Meetings will be in the auditorium.

Meetings are held on Thursdays in Room 319 until 3:55 p.m.
The Bluegrass Club allows string students to experience a style of music that is quite different from Classical music.  Bluegrass music has many influences, including Country Western music, American Folk music & Scottish and Irish Folk music.  This group traditionally performs at the Senior Citizen Breakfast and the Spring Concert.

Students will help to organize school events which will promote school spirit.  Members will assist in the planning of dances, fund raising events, etc.  Students will be involved in the election of class officers for the future sophomore class.

The Yearbook Club is comprised of students actively involved in all aspects of the preparation of the annual yearbook Reflections.  Yearbook club is open to all 7th, 8th and 9th grade students who can work Tuesdays after school in Room 112 until 3:55 p.m.   Activities will include:  designing, writing, photography, and learning to design and layout pages on a computer.
