May 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:
On Tuesday, June 3, 2008 and Wednesday, June 4, 2008, eighth grade students will be taking the New York State Social Studies Assessment.
Eighth grade students will start their testing promptly at 7:45 a.m. each day. If you drive your child to school, please plan to have your child here on time. Please note that the social studies teachers will be providing their students with the room locations they will need to report to for the testing. We will also post the schedules near the Main Office and Library for reference.
The assessment will measure the students’ ability in historical content, critical thinking and historical writing. On June 5th, students will complete the first part of the exam, which consists of forty-five multiple choice questions and short-answer questions. On June 6th, students will complete the Document Based Questions and one essay question. Each day, students will be tested for at least 90 minutes. In the event that your child is ill and cannot take the test on the designated testing days, make-up testing will take place on days following the original testing dates.
Parents can best help their children prepare for this test by making sure that they are mentally and emotionally prepared. Just before the test, make sure your child:
• gets a good night’s sleep
• eats a wholesome breakfast
• dresses comfortably
• arrives to school on time
• brings several #2 pencils to school
Please remember that your child’s social studies teacher is available to answer any questions you might have regarding this assessment. Otherwise, please feel free to call Jeffrey Harris, Social Studies Department Chairperson at 730-4864.
Sincerely,
